The Freezer Layer is the fifth layer in Donkey Kong Bananza. The Freezer is snowy land home to sweet treats, zebras, and, of course, lots of Banandium Gems.
As you traverse through the Freezer, you’ll need to be quick on your feet or else you’ll fall into the icy waters or even the molten lava. Luckily for you, Zebra Kong will give you the ability to run even faster — letting you cross the most terrains at ease.
Below, we list where to find all of the Banandium Gems in the Freezer Layer we’ve found so far. We’re still updating this guide with more golden bananas as we find them.
Sublayer 500 Banandium Gems
We’ve found 39 Banandium Gems in Sublayer 500 in the Freezer Layer.
#1: Chillin’ in the Freezer Layer!
After you destroy the Stake on the Freezer Path in The Divide, drop down to find this chunk of bananas in the snow in front of you.
#2: A View of Crumbly Bridge
From the Crumbly Bridge, if you look back up at Cold-Colt Crest, you’ll see a small cavern. Enter it to find the banana inside.
#3: A Snowy-Cliffside Secret
It might be very tempting to snowboard down this slope, but hold your temptations for now! Walk down the slope until you find the first lamp on the right wall. Hug the wall and dig down until you land on the platform below or end up in the very room with the banana.
#4: Turned Up Under Turnips
After your very first ramp in Sublayer 500, you’ll meet a zebra. Stand beside the zebra and dig straight down to land onto a turnip patch. Dig into the turnip patch to land in an area with a banana.
#5: Slumbering in the Snow
In the snowy room with the Cold-Colt Crest Cave Getaway, use your hand slap sonar to discover a Banandium Gem hidden under a snow pile. Smash your way through to get a banana.
#6: Under the Cliff-Edge Scoop Hut
Turn right before crossing the Clumby Bridge and follow the path until you find a grid with a banana behind it. Head to the left of the grid to find an entrance to this cave.
#7: Enshrined atop the Pillar
Follow the path to your right before crossing the Crumbly Bridge and you’ll see a slippery iron pillar. Use hand slap on the wooden platform to raise it higher to get the banana at the top.
#8: Battle: Snowball Rollin’
You earn this banana after completing the Freezer Layer Battle Challenge 1. The entrance is located inside an ice cream igloo next to the Crumbly Bridge. (Transforming into Kong Bananza form and using rolls and power punches makes this fight go by faster.)
#9: Over the Freezing River
Beneath the Crumbly Bridge, you’ll find the Banandium Gem on top of a platform in the freezing river. Hand slap to raise a few platforms out of the water, allowing you to cross to the first platform. Note that the bridge connecting to the banana will crumble if you don’t have the Zebra Bananza power. You can either chunk jump over the bridge, use the aforementioned Zebra Bananza power, or drop down from the ledge shown above (if you progress forward through the lava room).
#10: Hidden Behind the Waterfall
Next to the Crumbly Bridge, there’s a waterfall. Climb the iron wall to reach behind the waterfall where there’s a tunnel filled with snow. Go all the way to the end of this tunnel to find the banana.
#11: Across Crumbly Bridge
By following the main quest in the Freezer Layer, you’ll cross the Crumbly Bridge and find this banana!
#12: Clearing a Red-Hot Path
Inside the Freezer Layer Challenge Course 1 (next to the Crumbly Bridge), progress through the first segment of rotating areas to find this banana at the top of a platform.
#13: Behind the Red-Hot Paths
Before you complete the Freezer Layer Challenge Course 1, jump to this lower platform and wait for the cleared part of the moving wall you used to reach this area to appear. You can also punch more rolluskoids over the edge to create more paths. Hang on the safe part of the wall and move together with it until you find an opening to the right where this hidden banana is.
#14: Climbing a Red-Hot Path
Progress through the Freezer Layer Challenge Course 1 to find this banana at the end of the challenge just waiting for you.
#15: Battle: Quick Quake Quarrel
You earn this banana after completing the Freezer Layer Battle Challenge 2. The entrance to this challenge is on the left side of the Coolstripe Cavern in Snowy Crossroads.
#16: Un-Voiding the Scoop Hut
To the right of the Coolstripe Cavern entrance, you’ll find a giant zebra head made of snow. Break its walls to find the banana inside of it.
#17: The Freezer Growtone
You can get three Banandium Gems from the Growtone. Feed the Growtone some gold to unlock the first Banandium Gem.
#18: The Hungry Freezer Growtone
Feed the Growtone some more gold to unlock the second Banandium Gem.
#19: The Sated Freezer Growtone
Feed the Growtone a grand total of 3,000 gold to unlock all three Banandium Gems.
#20: Freezer Hide-and-Seek
Go right from the Snowy Crossroads when facing the Coolstripe Carvern entrance. In the next portion of the village, a Fractone asks you to find four others hidden in the area.
The first is to the left of a zebra head on the ground, there’s one inside each house, and the last one is on top of the highest building in this area. Complete this mission to get the banana.
#21: Heavily Protected Produce
After you teeleport to the Snowy Crossroads tuning fork, turn to the right and head down the hill. Walk past the hide-and-seek Fractones and look over the edge to find a voided Banandium Gem along with a few crockoids. Follow the purple path into the house and destroy the strange seal. Return back outside, defeat the crockoids, and collect your banana.
#22: Scoop Hut in the Sky
While we’re not sure if this is the intended solution, we solved it the following janky way:
To reach this area, you’ll first need to unlock the Zebra Bananaza transformation. Afterward, teeleport to the Coolstripe Cavern Ledge Getaway (located next to Banandium Gem #28, Sitting on the Snow). Cross the crumbly bridge in zebra form and make your way over to the floating island. Because snow is a soft material, it’ll latch onto other objects if you throw it. Repeatedly throw snow chunks at the island until you create a snow bridge to your position. Cross over and collect the gem.
#23: Cracking Open Coolstripe Cavern
Remove the purple void goo from the cavern entrance by following the trail of it and breaking the machine. You’ll get this banana as part of the story.
Follow the main path ahead once you enter Coolstripe Cavern. Past the falling icicles is a small pool of freezing water, and you can use hand slap to raise platforms or throw a turf chunk at the heavy icicle above the water to break it and make a safe path. The gem is in an alcove at the far end of the pool.
#25: Beware Falling Icicles
At the top of Coldstripe Cavern’s pool room, directly across from the getaway location, is a small path leading to a banana. Mind the icicle overhead as you move to get the gem.
#26: Battle: Barely Skating By
This challenge ruin is in the middle of Coolstripe Cavern, in the flooded chamber where icicles fall, and near the Coolstripe Cavern Pool getaway location.
In the middle of Coolstripe Cavern, at the top of the ramp where icicles fall near the Barely Skating By challenge, is where this gem rests, surrounded by gold.
This banana is half-buried in snow in front of the Coolstripe Cavern Ledge getaway point.
#29: Gazing at the Cooling Tower
Just before you get to the Coolstripe Cavern Exit tuning fork, turn left and head out onto a small ledge. To the left is a rope you can activate to make reaching this point easier in the future, and to the right is the banana.
#30: Kept in a Coolstripe Cubby
Enter the cavern just beyond the Coolstripe Cavern Exit tuning fork, and the gem is in an alcove under a grill. You can climb the stone wall to reach it.
#31: Shifty Smash: Above the Caverns
After you acquired the Zebra bananza, go back to the Coolstripe Cavern tuning fork. Turn around and walk on the straight path forward back into the cave until you see the platform you can raise by clapping. Head up this platform and you’ll find a ramp that will take you to the top of the cavern. Look for the floating triangle to start the Shifty Smash challenge. You’ll receive the banana as a reward for completing it.
#32: Coolstripe Cavern’s Lost Treasure
At the top of Coolstripe Cavern, go straight from the entry point until you reach a circle of gold pieces on the ground. Dig a hole in the middle of this circle to fall inside a secret room where this banana is located.
#33: Shifty Smash: Ice-Cold Lakeside
Across the frozen river, below and behind the tower, is a Shifty Smash Challenge. Destroy the shifty stone on both sides of the ice circle before time runs out to get this gem.
#34: U-Turn on a Crumbly Road
The entrance to the Zebra Bananza: Pop Party Ancient Ruin can be found after you take the barrel on Sublayer 301 back to the cooling tower on Sublayer 300. Rather than follow the path to the left, turn to the right to find the Ancient Ruin.
This banana can be found under you at the start of the challenge if you use your sonar hand slap. Drop down onto the platform below you and quickly run around the block to find the Banandium Gem.
Pop all five balloons in the challenge to receive this Banandium Gem.
After you drop down from the start, run around the barrel you to reveal another banana underneath the path. Drop down to collect the banana.
#37: Behind the Cooling Tower’s Eyes
You can climb up the tower through a hole in the back of the Cooling Tower’s mouth, accessible via the Cooling Tower Top Floor tuning fork. Head to the top and drop to lower part, staying on the nose of the giant zebra head. Destroy the eyes of the tower to open a pathway that leads to this banana.
#38: Cranky’s Freezer Rant
Go all the way to the top of the Cooling Tower to find Cranky Kong inside a small house with Rambi. Talk to him and he will give you the banana.
#39: Freezer Chip Exchange
Speak with your concierge Fractone and select the Chip Exchange option. Trade chips and gold to receive a Banandium Gem. If you’ve traded for Banandium Gems before, even on other layers, the amount of chips and gold will cost more.
If you’d rather not spend your gold on a getaway, you can wait until you find the Chip Exchange in the village in Sublayer 301.
Sublayer 501 Banandium Gems
We’ve found 21 Banandium Gems in Sublayer 501 in the Freezer Layer.
#40: Through Coolstripe Cavern
This big Banandium Gem is right in front of you when you land in Sublayer 501.
#41: Molten Hot Choco-Banana
The Banandium Gem is in the middle of a chocolate lava pool. Tear off a piece of hard terrain from the mound around the gem, and Turf Surf to avoid touching the lava. Spin by pressing Y to shatter and collect the gem.
#42: Battle: Bowling Brawl
As you reach the end of the path in this early Sublayer 501 area, icicles will fall from the sky, clearing a path to the Ancient Ruin to the right. Inside, you’ll need to defeat four Rolluskoids and use their bodies to remove lava surfaces so you can progress further in. Using the Kong Bananza form makes this challenge a bit easier.
#43: Coolin’ Down in the Canter Creamery
Use ice chunks to make a path up the wall of lava, where you’ll find a Banandium Gem on a bed of gold. You’ll likely run into this banana as part of the main story.
#44: Battle: Magma Mayhem
Unseal the ruin to the left of the Canter Creamery entrance, and head inside for a battle challenge. This one has you defeat six antickoids, but most of them are on isolated islands separated by lava. Turf Surf on the rocks they leave behind after defeat to bridge the gap.
#45: Traversing the Massive Iceberg
Pay 1,000 gold to unlock the Rising Iceberg Rush ruins near Canter Creamery. The first gem is at the end of the first obstacle course, which requires you to raise a path by punching a balloon enough times. Cross the path as quickly as you can, before it sinks back into the clouds.
#46: Edge of the Massive Iceberg
The second Rising Iceberg gem pops up on the second obstacle course at the far left of the path. Once you collect it, go back to the balloon to raise the path again. Otherwise, you won’t have enough time to climb the tower and reach the end.
#47: Mastering the Massive Iceberg
This third Rising Iceberg gem is your reward for completing the obstacle course.
#48: Smothered in Chocolava
When looking at the Zebra Elder, turn to the right and head down the path way towards the tower. Turn to the left and walk up the hill to find a pullable rope that will activate an ice maker. Pull the rope and create a hole in the little chocolate mountain so the ice cubes clear the lava in the surrounding area. In the area to the right of the record piece, there is a walled area full of lava. Inside, you’ll find the sunken Banandium Gem. Wait for the ice cubes to melt the lava on the walls, so you can destroy them. The ice cubes will eventually reach the banana, clearing away the lava and allowing you to destroy it
We recommend to leave the ground as is because if you leave a lot of divots everywhere, the ice will get stuck and won’t reach the banana.
#49: Shifty Smash: Over Ice and Lava
After you get your Zebra Bonanza powers, cross the crumbly bridge towards the floating island. On the island you’ll find the Floating Chocolava Lake Getaway and a shifty challenge. Destroy the blocks across the ice and lava platforms to get a banana.
If you want to make the challenge easier for yourself, you can clear away the lava before you even start the challenge.
#50: Freezer Smashin’ Stats
Climb up the wall behind Battle: Magma Mayhem to find Smashintone. They’ll give you a Banandium Gem if you’ve smashed through at least 20,000 cubic meters of snow.
Follow the path behind the Stuff Shop and climb up the wall to the top. If you look up into the air, you’ll notice a bunch of rotating fans. On top of the highest blade, you’ll find a banana. To get there, you’ll need to cross the rotating fans like normal until you reach the fourth fan. Climb up the pole of the fan drop down onto the previous fan. Climb up this fan’s pole to where you’ll find the Banandium Gem.
#52: Kept Warm in the Field
When facing the Zebra Elder, turn to the right and follow the path leading upwards. On your left, you’ll spot two ice squeeloids near a rotating block covered in lava. Hit the two ice squeeloids into the rotating block until you get rid of the lava and reveal the Banandium Gem inside. Once the coast is clear of lava, head inside and collect the banana.
#53: Trembling Steps through Powder
The entrance to the Precarious, Powdery Path is covered in lava. Hit one of the ice squeeloids into the lava to clear it away and enter the Ancient Ruin. The first Banandium Gem is found in the middle of the powdery path, but make sure to spam hand slap to reveal the path ahead of you.
#54: Treacherous Steps through Powder
This banana is found at the end of the Precarious, Powdery Path Ancient Ruin.
#55: Extra Steps through Powder
Head behind the barrel that shoots you out of the Ancient Ruin and hand slap to reveal another pathway. Spam hand clap and carefully cross the moving ice platforms to find the last banana hidden under the powder.
#56: Through a Too-Hot Tunnel
When facing the Zebra Elder, turn to the right and follow the path upwards. On your right, you’ll find six pullable fruit along with one fruit in the middle of a pool of lava. Uproot one of the fruit on the sides to reveal an ice cube. Using the ice cube, turf surf to the middle fruit and pull it out of the ground to reveal a hole. Drop down to find a rotating tunnel whose walls are covered in lava and a block of ice beside it. Break off a piece of ice and Turf Surf over to the banana on the other side.
#57: A View of Canter Creamery
After you enter the cave underneath the first long crumbly bridge on Sublayer 500, follow the path to the left to find a breakable wall. Destroy it and follow the path to find a stake. Once broken, drop down the resulting hole to find this banana.
#58: Beneath the Zig-Zag Bridges
After you de-void the record piece past the Zig-Zag Bridges tuning fork, use the record piece to Turf Surf under the bridge and into the hole in the wall with the banana.
After you snowboard down the first slope in Sublayer 500, you’ll find the very first Zebra in the Freezer Layer. Stand right beside the zebra and dig straight down to land in a huge cavern with a turnip patch beside you. If you look over the edge, you’ll find a stake. Destroy it and drop down to find this banana.
#60: Buried in the Cooling Tower
After you activate the ice maker in Sublayer 501, drop down to the area below and use your sonar to reveal a Banandium Gem in the wall. If you break the wall, you’ll see that the banana is covered in lava. Climb back up to the ice and dig out a path from the ice maker to the banana to release it from the lava.
#61: Behind the Cooling Tower
Follow the path behind the Stuff Shop and climb to the top of the wall. Turn to the left and get as close to the Cooling Tower as you can without falling off. You can either use your Zebra Bananza powers and roll in mid air, or chunk jump and roll in mid air. Follow the pathway to the back of the Cooling Tower to find a banana.
These 13 bananas are completely skipped in the in-game collection menu on your first visit to the Freezer Layer. You may need to beat the full game before returning to grab these, but we’ll update this guide when we figure out how to find them.
Sublayer 502 Banandium Gems
We’ve found 11 Banandium Gems in Sublayer 502 of the Freezer Layer.
#76: Hoofin’ it to Hot-Hoof Heater!
After you descend into Sublayer 502, you’ll find this bunch of bananas.
#77: Hidden in Chocolava Cave
Turn right from where you enter the layer, and you’ll see a metal pathway bridging two chocolate mounds. Under the center of the pathway is a hole with no lava. Drop down that hole, and follow the path to the Banandium Gem
#78: Battle: Fighting on the Run
After you land in Sublayer 502, turn to the right to see a construction Fractone standing beside a blocked battle challenge. Pay 600 gold to clear the rubble and transform into Zebra Kong to head inside. Defeat the six squeeloids to earn the gem, but choose your pathing carefully because the snow can only be walked on once and you’ll need to be careful of the huge hole in the middle of the stage.
The Ice-Serve Slope Ancient Ruin challenge can be found after you cross the ice bridge in Sublayer 502. The first banana is unlocked after you fill the bowl at the bottom of the hill with ice.
#80: A Sneaky Second Serving
Halfway up the hill, you’ll find a suspicious pile of snow that sticks out of the ground. Remove the snow in this area to find a concrete floor. Destroy the concrete with your Kong Bananza powers or one of the boom rocks to find another bowl! Fill this bowl with ice to earn another banana.
On either side at the top of the hill, you’ll find a climbable black wall. Climb onto the wall and make your way to the top to find the last banana.
#82: Treat on a Tiny Island
Face away from the Ice-Serve Slope challenge, and turn left. On the other side of the chocolate wall is an ice bridge that gradually materializes as you walk on it. Transform into Zebra Bananza to avoid slipping off the pathway, and follow it until it drops you in front of the Banandium Gem.
#83: Freezer Fragmentone Recovery
Near the molten chocolate at the back of the island with the ice machine controls is a broken Fragmentone who, as usual, is missing three pieces. One is to their right on a small island surrounded by lava, but they’ll fall into the lava if you try walking along the path as it is. Grab ice chunks off the never-melt ice cube to the left of the main Fragmentone to clear lava away and make a safe path.
#84: Freezer Fragmentone Restoration
The other two are on another small island directly ahead of the main Fragmentone. Use more ice chunks from the never-melt cube to clear lava on either side of the path and to clear the lava that hangs over the rotating platform, and lead the two back to their rightful place.
#85: Tricky Trot to the Ice Maker
Face the pillar with the switch that activates the ice machine, and turn left. You’ll see a zebra standing near a small square platform of crumbly ice that turns into a path as you walk on it. Transform into Zebra Bananza — using the gold clusters nearby to replenish your Bananza meter if need be — and follow the ice path to the gem. The path develops slowly, so don’t use Zebra Bananza’s charge or you’ll fall into the lava below.
#86: Looking over Chocolava
Head to Canter Creamery tuning fork in Sublayer 501. When facing away from Zebra Elder, go to the right to find a pathway leading to an opening in the wall. Drop down and follow the pathway until you find a stake. Destroy the stake and drop into the hole to find the banana.
